  • Equinor Partners with Battelle to Create Decarbonization Hub in Appalachian Basin

Equinor, a global broad energy company headquartered in Houston, Texas, recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Battelle to advance development of a decarbonized regional energy cluster in the tri-state region of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

This partnership will enable the timely and progressive development of one of the first low-carbon industrial regions in the United States.

“As anyone working in this sector knows, Equinor has maintained a global leadership position in CCS deployment since mid-1990s. It will be great to work with them on further developing CO2 storage in the Appalachian Basin,” says Neeraj Gupta, Technical Director – Carbon Management for Battelle’s Energy Division. “The work that we have done on past projects for the Department of Energy over the past 20 years, and the extraordinary people we have working on these efforts, have led to this milestone announcement. We are excited to get started.”

Currently, Battelle co-leads the Midwest Regional Carbon Initiative (MRCI) with the Illinois State Geological Survey. The MRCI is a US DOE-funded program tasked with accelerating acceptance and deployment of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage across 20 states in US Midwest, New England, and Mid-Atlantic.
