Heidelberg Materials was recently selected for negotiations for a $500 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to capture the carbon dioxide produced from their cement plant in Mitchell, Indiana. The cement plant is the second largest in operation in the United States, and with the addition of CCS, the plant will be able to capture ~2 million tons of CO2 from its operations per year. This addition is a big step to decarbonizing the creation of cement, a process that produces large amounts of CO2.
This award is one of the largest to be potentially awarded as part of the DOE’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstration’s Industrial Demonstrations Program for Cement and Concrete which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from industrial activities like producing cement.
